As the new Principal for Blackwater Integrated College I am delighted to welcome you to our first prospectus for the College. Our College is due to open in September 2008. Blackwater Integrated College will be formed from two existing schools, Down Academy Controlled Integrated High School and Rowal lane Integrated College. This is an exciting opportunity, whichwill increase the number of available integrated places in themid-Down area.

From the outset dedicated staff will work in partnership with parents and Governors to ensure that the ethos and principles of Integrated Education characterise our classroom environments and college community.

You may be exploring the integrated sector for the first time or you may be searching for the opportunity to give your child the natural progression from integrated primary school to integrated college. We are providing local children with such a college in their own community.

Our college philosophy provides a balanced environment so that children from different religious, cultural and social backgrounds can learn together whilst valuing their own tradition and cultural beliefs. In this open community we aim to share knowledge, respect difference and teach in a child-centred way that is structured to meet each child’s needs and aspirations.

Academic achievement is a principal target but it is also essential that each child can develop his or her self-esteem, self-respect and respect for others. The educational, emotional and social development of our children will be at the heart of the College.

Like all integrated colleges, Blackwater Integrated College will have parent-led management structures with parent governors as well as a Parents’ Council.

I appreciate that making the transition from primary level to a post-primary school can be an anxious and nervous time. I aim to ensure that every individual child is welcomed into a caring and happy environment.

I hope that as you read this prospectus you will gain an understanding of the benefits that Integrated Education provides, not only for children but also for parents, their friends and the community. I look forward to welcoming you and your children to Blackwater Integrated College.
