GCSE Geography

Examining Board

Without Geography – you’re nowhere!

Our world is likely to change more in the next 50 years than ever before. Geography explains why and will help prepare you for those changes.

Geographers can:

Geographers are:

Handle data
Ask questions and find answers
Make decisions about an issue
Organise themselves
Think creatively and independently
Good communicators
Spatially aware
Problem solvers
Good team players
Computer literate

If you enjoy studying Geography, carry on studying it! You are more likely to obtain your best results in a subject you enjoy.

Main Topics: Each one is worth 25% and is examined in a one hour paper.

Paper 1 – Managing Places. Why does the beach at Newcastle have large rocks at the back of it?  Is it necessary? If the sea level rises, will Downpatrick be flooded? We will learn about coastal environments and how they are managed. Paper 2 - The Hostile World. Why do we not get hurricanes? Will we get them with climate change? We will learn about natural hazards such as volcanoes, earthquakes, wildfires and hurricanes.
Paper 3 - The Shrinking World. According to travel publisher Lonely Planet, which place was a “must see” destination in 2007? Is international travel a good thing? Do tourists help when they visit LEDCs? Studying tourism should help us answer these questions.
Coursework - This is worth 25% of the final mark and involves local fieldwork. One piece will be a local study and the other will involve a global issue like water or energy. A residential is planned as part of this course.

Examinations will be taken at the end of year 11 and 12, allowing some pupils to resit exams in order to improve their grades.

The transferable skills which Geography fosters (for example, literacy, numeracy and communication skills) are an asset in the world of employment today. Geography is about the future and encourages flexible thinking, as well as providing a firm base for life long learning. It links well with other GCSEs such as Science, Mathematics and History.

You will enjoy this course if you are willing to work hard and have an interest in the issues which affect our world. You should be willing to work on your own as well as being part of a group.
