Key Stage 3 Course

GCSE History

Examining Board

Course content

History
G.C.S.E. History follows AQA Schools History Project.

This involves in depth study into;
Medicine Through Time.                       35% of total marks
The American West.                             40% of total marks

The Exam is modular based, 2 modular exams, one at the end of Year 11 and the other at the end of Year 12.

Coursework involves a;
History Around Us controlled assessment.   25% of total marks

This involves investigating a local site and then answering a series of questions on the site. This is carried out under exam conditions but pupils are allowed to have all their research material with them on the day of the assessment.

Within our GCSE study you will learn a lot about the range of problems which human beings have faced and overcome and of our potential for improvement. Once you have learnt about the problems faced by other groups in bygone years, it will give you a better perspective to judge events which are happening in your own life-time

The skills which you will have the opportunity to develop while studying History are;

The ability to communicate: both spoken and written.
The skills needed for working effectively with others and for problem solving; skills which any future employer would want you to have.

Since many of the issues studied in History do not have clear and easy explanations, while you are studying the topic you will have the chance to become more skilled at reasoning, deduction, and at organising and evaluating information.

GCSE History Short Course

A  History Short Course is also available.
This involves an in depth study into Medicine Through Time and the Controlled Assessment History Around Us. Candidates can still achieve an A-E grade and the short course is equal to ½ a GCSE. The skills acquired by pupils is the same in both the Full and Short Course.

Entry Level History

Entry Level History is a Certificate awarded subject. This involves a series of topics ranging from American West to WW2 and beyond. This is not equivalent to a GCSE. This course is suitable for candidates who enjoy History but feel the content is too demanding but still wish to develop enquiry and investigative skills.
