Marking Policy
MARKING POLICY 
Aims
To help students to understand what they can do to improve their work and what their marks mean.
To provide parents with a clearer view of the marking process and the progress made by their children.
Purpose of marking work
Marking should
- Monitor and record progress
- Correct work
- Assist feedback and give individual targets
- Assess students’ skills
- Celebrate achievement
- Reinforce learning
- Give parents a clearer indication of attainment and progress
- Show students that their work is important.
Marking work
- Students’ work should be marked on a regular basis
- Marking should not be in red
- Marking should be positive and constructive
- Comments should include targets and challenges for future work
- Marking should focus on both attainment and effort
A combination of the following methods may be used.
- Review marking, checking that work is done with no grade or comment.
- Quality marking, giving a detailed mark with positive feedback.
- Interactive marking when the work of students is marked as they work on it, giving on the spot assessment and immediate oral or written feedback.
- Selective marking focusing on one aspect of the work with the rest skimmed.
- Self marking by students may be appropriate at times.
All teachers should use the same symbols when correcting students’ work.
Monitoring, evaluating and reviewing the marking policy
Marking should be monitored regularly within departments as well as on a whole school level. The policy will be reviewed and evaluated accordingly.
